Intervista al segretario generale della Nato, Scheffer

di novaja gazeta del 22 marzo 2007

(pagina 4)

... in the past, the balance of power between the two blocs has the world more secure than it is now? What words more suited to the current NATO relations : the balance of power or the connection?

—  NATO and Russia face the same challenges. First, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is a global problem. I suspect that Russia is as concerned about the possible acquisition of nuclear weapons by Iran, as we are.Secondly, the Russians are the same victims of terrorism, as people in the countries of NATO. Remember Beslan, hostages in a Moscow theatre (at the theater. А.М.) Thirdly, Russia is also a victim of "problem" and "bad" countries. She also suffers from the Afghan drug also interested in the stability of Afghanistan, where NATO UN-mandated holds its most important this military operation.

.Readers not always uhwatarve meaning of these words, but I will tell them : asymmetrical threat. The adapted Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, we have no agreement. Russia wants it to be ratified, and we are seeking to be discharged Istanbul commitments to withdraw troops and bases in the air. Not everything is difficult. But for the ratification of the agreement to all interested players. .But can I make the parliaments of NATO countries to ratify the CFE Treaty, if they do not want to.

We recognize and appreciate the positive developments in Georgia, where Russians and Georgians agreed on military matters.  I asked Sergei Ivanov, of course, rhetorical, why he did not speak to Smirnov (leader of the Trans-Dniester)? .Allegedly, there is a European interest in the withdrawal of Russian arms from Trans-Dniester. We thus do political commitment to ratify the CFE Treaty and becomes huge burden which affects the Russia-NATO. If I answered that Smirnov does not want to give it, I would say : what, a great and strong Russia can affect? Mol, sorrow, a friend, but you have no choice ...
