Intervista al segretario generale della Nato, Scheffer

di novaja gazeta del 22 marzo 2007

(pagina 5)

... — You expect invitations to new countries to join NATO at the next Alliance summit? Does the future of Ukraine and Georgia?

—  Admission to NATO is a process based on the readiness assessment. I do not know whether the new invitations to the next NATO summit in 2008, because I do not know how to be ready by the time the countries that wish to join. It is not possible to mix them all together. In the Balkans, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Croatia and Albania are working on the "Plan of Action prepare for the entry." The rest of the region after the Riga summit adopted only in the Partnership for Peace programme. Including Serbia, which for us is very important.

This is another category in the sense of the NATO. It has long special relationship with the Alliance, with it, we are "intensive dialogue", but watching the political processes in Ukraine, and we believe that only the Ukrainians could decide what to move.

.Georgia is the same case. She only recently began individual plan of action for the partnership, will have an "intensive dialogue" with NATO, and we have enough of these instruments of cooperation. There is an important principle, and I about him always say publicly : NATO supports the territorial integrity of Georgia. We want solutions to the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia was found as soon as possible, but NATO is not playing a direct role.

Expand NATO, the ABM Treaty, the American soldiers in Bulgaria and Romania are all cause a negative reaction Russian society. How to develop a level of confidence?

—  Before NATO and Russia is a huge Front joint work. But, according to a European study of public opinion, 34% of Russians see NATO threat. At the same time, I ask, did the Russian press gives a balanced picture of what is the NATO, and what it does? At the same time, I can see that 53% of Russians consider it necessary to cooperate with NATO in important security matters.

We need to do a lot to create an image of NATO in Russia, and we look forward to assistance from the Russian side. Perhaps not only from the press and especially from the Russian leadership, with whom we have worked together. ...
